I am indulging in my secret shame…It’s pumpkin-spiced and decaffeinated – but it’s NOT in Canberra. That’s because Australia has better coffee options and the only Starbucks in Canberra closed years ago. Having said I don’t drink these for the coffee, I drink them for the nostalgia of autumns spent in the northern hemisphere… and the sweet, sweet sugar! England hasn’t realised yet that there is better coffee out there.
That’s right – this Canberra Coeliac has been out and about, having adventures outside Australia. I’ve been back in London now for just over two years and have one more year to go. The move was quick and the last two years have been a whirlwind of moving, settling, travelling, adjusting and, of course, eating.
The last few years have been a transition period for me in all aspects of my life. My responsibilities over the last few years have changed and unsurprisingly, my pastimes (aka my blog) had to be parked as other priorities took precedence. However, as life has settled down, I’ve found myself with the time to write and commit a little more to one of my favourite hobbies – GBMG!
So I’m back in Blighty for the time being but still eating and reveiwing. The UK has a strange relationship with gluten free food. There is a hangover in many establishments of the strict rules put enforced by the European Union Pre-Brexit, so while there is a knowledge of cross contamination, regulations can be pretty slack, and staff are now more likely not to understand what gluten is. In a lot of restaurants, you will find allergen menus and if you go somewhere a bit flash, the staff know what they’re doing. Eating in the UK is not as easy as it was a few years ago but there are still gems where you can eat good food safely and comfortably.
Over the next few months, I’m aiming to review some of the places I go in London, then provide recommendations for some of the destinations I’ve been lucky enough to visit during my adventures across Europe over the last couple of years. After my long time away, I hope you’ll stick around and enjoy what I have to say during my current adventure.
